Flyside Chats: Episode 4 Tom Davis

The idea behind the Flyside Chats

After 2020 I’ve been feeling a bit disconnected from people that I know in the fly fishing world. I’m not the most social of anglers and I do a lot of fishing by myself. But there are a few folks that I get out with and I didn’t get to see most of them in 2020. I didn’t make any trips out of state and I didn’t get out nearly as much as I would have liked to.

So it is with some optimism I am looking forward to 2021 and the fishing that comes with it. Flyside Chats is a going to be series of videos where I try to reconnect with some tenkara and fly fishing folks that I know and hopefully with some new people too. I want to talk to people about what they’re looking forward to exploring in the season(s) ahead.

Episode 4 Featuring Tom Davis
This fourth episode features Tom Davis. I’ve never really had a chance to speak at length with Tom and I really enjoyed our conversation. Tom is known in the US tenkara community especially for his extensive rod testing and reviewing that he does on his blog Teton Tenkara and on his YouTube channel.

  1. Anthony – I’m enjoying the Flyside Chats. You mentioned fly fishing with a rod and reel again – what type of outfit do you use? I too switch between tenkara and a traditional rod and reel.

    • I’ve been spending the most time lately with the Syndicate 11’ 2wt and Douglas DXF 11’ 3wt nymphing rods. I’ve also been using a 6.5’ 3wt fiberglass rod that I made with a blank from Japanese rod maker Tomo Ijuin on some small streams. What about you?

      • I have a couple of Douglas rods. A 5wt DHF (discontinued by Douglas) and a 7’3″ 3wt Upstream. The latter is my go-to small stream rod when not fishing tenkara – it’s loads of fun to fish. I also have an 8’6″ 4wt that I use for fishing Missouri’s trout parks.
