Episode 13 Jonathan Antunez
Jonathan is a friend from the tenkara world that I first “met” on FaceBook. I wanted to chat with him because he’s a very curious angler and he always seems to be delving into interesting things.
In this chat he mentions the Italian fixed-line fly fishing tradition known as Pesca alla Valsesiana. Patagonia produced a nice a short video about angler Arturo Pugno called Il Pescatore Completo | The Complete Fisherman that provides a nice introduction. Jonathan also brings up the Astorga Manuscript and the Spanish Leonese fly fishing tradition. He pointed me to this article about the Astorga manuscript.
Jonathan talks about fishing the Landon Meyer Micro-Leech –>> here’s a tying video
He also mentioned that he tied a streamer inspired by the Llama Fly. I found this page that talks about it a bit a provides the recipe.

The idea behind the Flyside Chats
After 2020 I’ve been feeling a bit disconnected from people that I know in the fly fishing world. I’m not the most social of anglers and I do a lot of fishing by myself. But there are a few folks that I get out with and I didn’t get to see most of them in 2020. I didn’t make any trips out of state and I didn’t get out nearly as much as I would have liked to.
So it is with some optimism I am looking forward to 2021 and the fishing that comes with it. Flyside Chats is a going to be series of videos where I try to reconnect with some tenkara and fly fishing folks that I know and hopefully with some new people too. I want to talk to people about what they’re looking forward to exploring in the season(s) ahead.
Cool interview. Really liked his passion for learning anything and everything about fishing. I can relate to the drive to understand and discover. I am now intrigued about the Spanish traditions.
Keep up the great work Anthony. Much appreciated!
Thanks. Yes, I knew about the Italian tradition – but hadn’t been thinking of it much lately – I’m definitely motivated to get back to investigating it more. And the Spanish tradition was pretty new to me – so that’s going to be a fun path to go down.
