If there’s anybody in the US tenkara scene that needs no introduction at all it’s Daniel Galhardo of Tenkara USA.
I first got to know Daniel a little bit when I contacted him about doing artwork for the first Tenkara USA Summit in West Yellowstone in 2011. He was gracious enough to give a chance to some guy that he didn’t know (and who is an amateur artist at best). Since then I did the art for a few more TUSA Summits, met Daniel a few times, got to fish with him once at the Virginia Summit and I got to edit the first Tenkara USA magazine with him. I also did an interview with Daniel for Midcurrent back in 2012.
Anyway, I’ve known Daniel for a long time now and I owe him a lot; first of course for introducing tenkara here in the US, and secondly just for being an all around cool guy and allowing me to get more involved in the tenkara world in the ways I’ve talked about above.
When I asked Daniel about contributing something for the 10 Year Anniversary Giveaways here at CastingAround he didn’t hesitate.
Daniel has provided three copies of his excellent tenkara book and three Tenkara USA Tenugui. If you need a good tenkara primer to get your tenkara angling jumpstarted this book will fit the bill. And what’s a tenugui you may ask?
In Japan, the tenugui is an ubiquitous item that can be used for a variety of tasks. The long and thin cotton cloth can wrap your tenkara rod to protect it from scratches, or wrap your head and neck to protect it from the sun. The thin unhemmed fabric will dry quickly and so can be used as a towel to clean or dry. And, of course, you can also simply hang it as decoration with your tenkara gear or in your fly-tying area.

If it wasn’t for Daniel where would we be? I’m in. Thanks for the opportunity.
Absolutely – I think about that often – I’m guessing I would not be fishing with a tenkara rod that’s for sure.
